Join us for this 6 hour, live in person, foundational workshop with presenter Courtney A. Brandon, LPC/MHSP, RPT.

This foundational training is designed for the mental health clinician who wants to learn the basics of the use of sand tray therapy in their play therapy work, and how to incorporate this modality with play-based expressive arts therapies for clients of all ages. This workshop will rely heavily on experiential opportunities as lived experience is the best way to learn and get a felt sense of the magic of expressing oneself through the use of sand and miniatures via play therapy techniques. As such, participants may choose to bring 10-15 of their own miniatures, but this is not required.

This event will be capped at 24 participants to allow for in-depth exploration and discussion of the topic. There will be several experiential play therapy opportunities to implement and process directives that can be used with a variety of client ages and presenting concerns.

Learning Objectives:

  • List the history of play therapy and the use of Sand therapies, including sandplay and sandtray, and compare and contrast similarities and differences between the two modalities and how each are incorporated in play therapy.

  • Describe the neuroscience backed rationale for the use of play therapy, specifically the use of sandtray therapy, in a variety of settings.

  • Describe the importance of symbolism and metaphor when implementing sandtray therapy in individual, family, and play therapy.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of play therapy use of sandtray concepts through personal experience and discussion.

  • Describe the role of the therapist when implementing play therapy technique of sandtray therapy in the play therapy sessions as well as other therapeutic modalities.

  • Discuss the ways sandtray therapy utilizes the therapeutic powers of play.
